Paris, France — A long-running dispute between two prominent figures in the Bangladeshi community in France has intensified following controversy surrounding a BMW lottery organized in connection with the recent Franco-Bangla Summer Fest concert. The conflict, which has largely played out on social media, has further divided sections of the community.

The dispute involves Syed Irfan, widely known within the community by the metaphoric nickname "Bhatija", and Koushik Ahmed Rabbani, founder of Français Avec Rabbani and OFIORA Formation, which provide French language training and administrative assistance services.

Background

According to information obtained by Citizen Perspective, Syed Irfan previously worked at Koushik Rabbani's office before leaving and establishing his own services. Following the death of his uncle, the late community figure Syed Abul Hasan Sabuj, who was well known for his social assistance work before passing away from dengue fever in Bangladesh several years ago, Irfan assumed management of the Facebook page and group known as "Asylum and Immigration in France" (Bengali name). He later established his own assistance office serving the Bangladeshi community.

Over the years, tensions reportedly developed between the two camps as both became active in providing services to Bangladeshi migrants and asylum seekers in France.

Business Rivalry

Citizen Perspective understands that Syed Irfan has frequently criticized what he describes as the commercialization of community-based assistance services, alleging that some businesses charge newly arrived migrants and individuals with limited knowledge of French administrative procedures excessive fees for translation, appointment booking, document preparation, and other administrative support.

Supporters of Irfan say his public criticism has disrupted an established market and has led to threats against him in the past. These claims have not been independently verified.

Koushik Rabbani is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of this sector within the Bangladeshi community in France. Through Français Avec Rabbani and later OFIORA Formation, he initially offered French language courses before expanding into administrative support services. Over time, his business activities reportedly expanded into driving theory preparation in Bengali, cultural events, cinema releases, sports organizations, business advisory services, restaurants, hotels, and other commercial ventures.

Rabbani states that he studied engineering before later pursuing legal studies in France.

Allegations Over Service Charges

Critics of Rabbani have alleged that clients were charged substantial fees for administrative services, including assistance related to legal representation available to asylum seekers. They also claim that clients paid for coordination with lawyers despite legal aid being available in France.

These allegations have circulated within the community for several years. No court has found Rabbani liable for any wrongdoing in relation to these claims, and he has publicly defended his business activities.

Concert and Lottery Controversy

The latest escalation followed the Franco-Bangla Summer Fest, during which Bangladeshi rockstar James performed in Paris.

The event revived memories of a previous attempt to organize a similarly named festival that was ultimately cancelled after authorities withdrew permission. Various allegations circulated online regarding that earlier event, including claims concerning ticket refunds, human trafficking through the involvement of Bangladesh Embassy in Paris and other controversies. However, those allegations have not resulted in publicly known legal findings.

The current dispute centers on a BMW lottery organized in connection with the concert. Some attendees and social media users alleged that the lottery lacked transparency and claimed that the winner had been predetermined.

The lottery winner, identified by community members as Rizwana, a Bangladeshi-origin transgender woman, subsequently became the subject of intense online discussion.

Syed Irfan (Metaphoric name Bhatija) publicly questioned the integrity of the lottery and stated on social media that he believed the winner may herself have been a victim of manipulation. He also offered public support should she require assistance.

Organizers and supporters have rejected allegations of misconduct surrounding the lottery.

Heated Confrontation

The online exchanges eventually escalated into a face-to-face meeting between the two sides earlier this week.

According to accounts shared by both parties on social media, the discussion became heated. Videos circulated online appear to show a verbal confrontation involving supporters of both camps.

Supporters of Irfan claim police were called after the situation escalated.

Rabbani's supporters have presented a different version of events, maintaining that the meeting was intended .
